It’s that time of year again – time for resolutions! While this may mean getting back to exercise routines, getting organized or beginning another diet – it’s also a great opportunity to focus on school. If your house is anything like mine, we make wonderful plans at the beginning of the school year, but about this time of year many of those plans have fallen by the wayside. Now is the time to renew those goals and routines. Here are some ideas to help families deal with the time constraints of school, work, parenting and life in general.
- Set up an area for homework. Restock supplies like pencils, paper, etc. to keep them easily accessible.
- Go through your child’s book bags and folders. Throw out papers that have been returned and help your child reorganize. (We put papers in a big box and have a “throw away” celebration on the last day of school).
- Set time limits for homework. Encourage your child to complete homework in a reasonable amount of time, without interruptions. The kitchen timer works well for this.
- Discuss your child’s progress with them. Talk about their strengths and areas that need improvement. Come up with a plan to help. If necessary schedule a conference with your child’s teacher.
- Check your child’s AR reading progress. AR is the program we use to monitor students’ independent reading. Reading practice is critical to developing lifelong reading skills. If you’re not sure how your child is doing, ask the teacher to send home an AR progress report. You can then choose some books to read with your child using the AR list posted on our website.
Our lives today are incredibly busy and it’s easy for things to get out of control. However the time and effort put forth now will make the rest of the school year go more smoothly. Making small revisions to your family routines will not only bring about success in school, but also peace at home.
